Kumar Gunaratnam Receiving Sri Lankan Citizenship

Colombo, 02 February, (

Department of Immigration and Emigration confirmed that Frontline Socialist Party Leader Kumar Gunaratnam would receive Sri Lankan citizenship effective from February 01.

The Chief Controller of Department of Immigration and Emigration Nihal Ranasinghe said, the application filed for Sri Lankan citizenship was approved and came into effect yesterday.

Member of the Frontline Socialist Party Noel Mudalige also known as Kumar Gunaratnam who was arrested on charges of violating visa regulations has been granted the Sri Lankan Citizenship.

The Frontline Socialist Party launched a series of protests last year demanding Sri Lankan citizenship for its leader.

Gunaratnam, who was evading the Sri Lankan the Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities for over nine months, was nabbed by the Police in the Anguruwella area, in Kegalle, in November, 2015.

He was taken into custody for overstaying his 30-day tourist visa since January 31, 2015. He was released last year after a 12-month imprisonment.

The government previously revealed that Gunaratnam will not be deported from the country if a formal request is made to reside in the country.

However the media unit of the Party said requests were forwarded to the Immigration and Emigration Department in February and November 2015 calling for citizenship, at no avail.

The government, in December, promised to grant Sri Lankan Citizenship to Kumar Gunaratnam, considering the requests put forward by the Frontline Socialist Party and various civil society bodies.

Co-spokesman of Cabinet Minister Rajitha Senaratna, addressing a press conference in Colombo, told media that necessary actions would be taken once Gunaratnam submits his application for the Citizenship.
