The new star Asela Gunaratne

By S.H.Moulana

Asela Gunaratne’s explosive innings in the 2nd T/20 Match played against Australia in Australia helped the Sri Lankan team to snatch the series.

This is soon after winning the T/20 series against South Africa in South Africa. In that series too Asela figured prominently to help the team immensely for its victory.

In both encounters played in Australia, Asela was chosen as Man-of-the-Match.

Asela Gunaratne is a highly consistent player with powerful shots square of the wicket.

The presence of a large number of Sri Lankan supporters at the ground made Asela to say ‘It was like we were playing in Sri Lanka’.

So far he has played six T/20 internationals and on three occasions he was not out and his total score in all six innings is 164 runs the number of balls faced 112 at an average of 54.66 per innings, with two 50s.

His highest score is 84 not out. He has so far scored 15 fours and 6 sixes.

In the match played on Sunday Sri Lanka was set to make forty eight off the last 18 balls and finally it became 36 to win from final two overs, the ‘never-say-die’ Gunaratne plundered three consecutive sixes and a four in one over to make the finish just plain sailing.

Now everyone is looking forward for the last match on Wednesday, although it has no bearing since the series is already won by Sri Lanka, but the Lankan fans are looking forward for yet another firework display from the new star Asela Gunaratne.
