Colombo, 07 January, (Asiantribune.com): Shanmuganathan Ravishankar alias Colonel Charles, the most ruthless militant, who was the Head of Liberation Tigers Military Intelligence, was killed on Saturday evening around 3.30 PM. He was said to be killed in a Claymore attack by Sri Lanka Army Deep Penetration Unit in Pa'l'lamadu in Mannaar. His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon in Kilinochchi and his body was taken in for cremation to LTTE’s Heroes cemetery located in Puthukkudiyiruppu.Charles joined the LTTE as a full-time member in December 1985. The self styled Colonel Charles was killed while he was riding in a van between Iluppaikkadavai and Pa’l’lamadu while on his way to inspect his regular forces in Mannaar. Along with him killed in the ambush were identified as Lt. Sukanthan (Sivapalan Sreetharan) from Jeyapuram, Lt. Veeramaravan (Pararajasingham Suthan) from Mallaavi and Lt. Kalaa (Sinnaththamby Kangatharan) from Vaddakkachchi.

Charles joined the LTTE as a full-time member in December 1985. He was taken into the Intelligence Wing following his military performance in Jaffna district and later in Vanni during the LTTE - India war. He served in a key position in LTTE Intelligence Wing between 1991 and 2004, also as the head of LTTE Intelligence in Batticaloa-Ampaa'rai district between 1997 and 2000. He has commanded a number of key military operations. Charle's  funeral ceremony was held in Kilinochchi. Charles was appointed as the Head of newly established Military Intelligence wing in 2004 by the LTTE leader V. Prabakaran.

On Sunday, the funeral ceremony was held in Kilinochchi. The remains of Charles was taken in procession from his home in Kilinochchi in a decorated vehicle to LTTE’s cemetary in Puthukkudiyiruppu, presided by C. Ilamparithi, Puthukkudyiruppu region Political Head of LTTE.

Col. Piraba, one of the colonels of LTTE Military Intelligence, lit the Common Flame, while the wife of slain Charles garlanded her husband’s remains.

Col. Soosai, Col. Athavan, Special Commander and the head of the LTTE Military Initial Training Schools, Thamilkumaran, the Head of LTTE Finance Wing, and Dr. Sivapalan garlanded Col. Charles’ remains.

Mr. Paranthaman, who had been Charles’ school teacher, spoke at the event.

In the meantime, Sri Lanka defense website revealed that Shanmuganathan Ravishankar alias Charles was one of the most dangerous criminals who had planned most of the civilian massacres and terrorist attacks in the Island's south.

The most heinous civilian massacre planned and executed by Charles was the bombing of Central Bank, Colombo in 1996. In this attack, 86 civilians were killed and over 1400 others suffered injuries.

According to defence intelligence sources, V. Prabhakaran had presented a "Pajero" jeep to Charles for his success in the Central Bank bomb attack. Charles was also known to have involved in terrorist attacks at Kolonnawa Fuel storage, Kelanithissa Power plant, JOC bomb in Colombo, and assassinations of key political figures and armed forces personnel in the country.
