Minister Rauff Hakeem’s visit to Riyadh

By S.H.Moulana

Rauff Hakeem, the minister of city planning and water supply, spent most of his time during his recent short visit to Saudi Arabia in finding ways to invite Saudi investments to Sri Lanka.

At a dinner hosted by the ambassador Azmi Thassim at his residence, Sri Lankan expatriates representing various government and private sectors expressed their views as to how we could further improve our relations with Saudi Arabia.
Ambassador Thassim in his speech emphasized how we can achieve this goal for the benefit of our country. Minister Hakeem explained in detail of the development schemes his ministry and the government as a whole have undertaken.

He particularly mentioned about the gigantic plan the government is now fast tracking to develop Kandy, the second most important city in the island nation.

He also detailed how they are going to turn Hambantota harbor into a money making concern with Chinese partnership.

The unanimous view of all those attended the meeting cum dinner was that it is high time our country’s president made a visit to Saudi Arabia, something yet to be done by any president.

It was pointed out that it can benefit Sri Lanka a great deal. Minister Hakeem is expected to take with him all the views expressed and convey them to his other colleagues in the cabinet and the president in particular.

Ambassador Thassim’s tireless work in promoting Sri Lanka to the country where he is posted is highly appreciated by the Sri Lankan expatriates.
