The Court of Appeal fixed revision application of Wimal Weerawansa for support on April 7

Colombo, 05 April, (

The Court of Appeal fixed for support on April 7, the revision application for bail, filed by Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa.

The Court of Appeal issued notice to the Attorney General who has been cited as a respondent in the bail application filed by United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa calling for his release to appear before Court.

The Attorney General was accordingly requested to appear before the Appeals Court on the 7th of April.
The Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Colombo High Court both rejected the bail application of Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa on five previous occasions.

Therefore the Parliamentarian filed the bail application at the Appeals Court. The bail application was today taken up for consideration before Appeals Court judge CJ Madawala. Due to the absence of a second judge the hearing was postponed to the 7th of April.

Through this revision application, Weerawansa sought an order against the Colombo High Court’s refusal to grant bail after being dismissed him revision petition.

The petitioner is also seeking an order to release him on bail.

The petitioner further sought an order to set aside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s order dated January 10 to remand the suspect.

In this application, the petitioner had cited the OIC of FCID (Unit 7), the Director of FCID and the Attorney General as respondents.

President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana appeared with Navin Marapana and Saumya Molligoda for the applicant.

MP Weerawansa was arrested on the 10th of January on charges of providing state vehicles to friends and family during his term as the former Minister of Construction and Housing, during the tenure of UPFA led government, thereby incurring the government financial losses.

He was further remanded till the 7th of April when the case was taken up for hearing yesterday.
