Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary, Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero surrendered, arrest warrants recalled and released on bail

Colombo, 21 June, (Asiantribune.com):

Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, who surrendered to courts this morning,and Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the Thero released and postponed the case till August 09.

Earlier in the morning, Ven.Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero has surrendered to the surrendered to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, this morning (21).

The two warrants issued on Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary were recalled this morning after the elusive Buddhist monk surrendered to Court.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had issued an arrest warrant on the 15 of June against the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, for failing to appear before the court.

Two cases were filed against the Thera in the Magistrate’s Court for allegedly defaming the Quran and assaulting the organizers of the Jathika Bala Sena media conference held in 2014.

The arrest warrant was issued after he failed to appear before the court with regard to the case filed against him and seven others on 8 charges including forcefully entering and sabotaging a press conference held at a hotel in Slave Island (on April 09, 2014), criminal force and minor assault.

A manhunt was launched for the hard-line Buddhist leader after a series of attacks on mosques and Muslim-owned businesses that authorities accuse him of encouraging.

A warrant was also issued for the Thero’s arrest in May on allegations of obstructing the police from exercising their duties in addition to making hate speeches in several places.
