21 Indian fishing poachers arrested in Sri Lankan waters

A total of 21 Indian fishing poachers were arrested in Sri Lankan waters in the last two-days.

Yesterday, seventeen (17) Indian fishing poachers and two steel hull bottom trawlers were arrested by Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard patrol craft in the northern territorial waters off Nagar Kovil (22, June).

Earlier on the 21st June, Naval personnel attached to a Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Northern Naval Command arrested 4 Indian poachers along with a fishing trawler engaged in illegal fishing practices in Sri Lankan territorial waters Northwest of Delft Island.

SL Navy and SLCG patrol craft attached to the Northern Naval Area whilst on routine patrol, detecting two Indian fishing trawlers 16.8 nm and 14.6 nm off respectively, off Nagar Kovil, engaged in bottom trawling were apprehended.

Having brought the arrested 17 fishermen, fishing trawler and their fishing gear to the naval base, Kankesanthurai, are to be handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward legal action.

The earlier arrested 4 Tamil Nadu fishermen along with their fishing trawler and fishing gear have been brought to the naval base SLNS Elara in Karainagar.

They were handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward legal action, the Navy said.
