More offer expected for duty-free vehicle permits

Asking price for one duty-free vehicle permit issued to the Northern Provincial Councilors is around SLR5.5 million. Many, ‘Asian Tribune,’ learnt, is waiting for a little higher offer - SLR 6 to 6.5 million.

In the latter part of May 2017, duty-free vehicle permits were issued to the Northern Provincial Councilors.

Out of the total of 38 Provincial Councilors, except for the Health Minister Dr. P. Sathiyalingham and Councilor Dr. Gnanaseelan Gunaseelan, other 36 received their duty-free vehicle permits.

These two have received duty-free concession, earlier in their capacity as government doctors and the five year period expected to expire in a few months, then they too will become entitled for the duty-free vehicle concession offered to the provincial councilors.

In 2015, the government imposed a ban on issuing permits for importing duty-free vehicles. Subsequently, when the ban was cancelled and concession restored, Northern Provincial Councilors were issued with duty-free vehicle import permits.

Each Councilor is entitled to import USD40, 000 – SLR6120794/- value worth of brand new vehicle and only has to pay 35% of total tax levied by the customs on the imported vehicle.

In the meantime, several Northern Provincial Councilors have taken up a glaring disparity issue in the issuances of duty-free vehicle import permits for them.

Now they had begun to urge to restore the duty-free vehicle import concession from USD40, 000 to USD 45,000.

It has been brought to the notice that, there was a disparity in the concession offered and pointed out that, the Eastern provincial councilors were given concession of USD45,000/ worth vehicle for importing and they paid only 30% of the total tax on the imported vehicle.

Accordingly, on the request of the Councilors, C.V.K.Sivangnam, Chairman of the Northern Provincial Council Assembly has written to the finance ministry to increase the amount of the duty-free vehicle concession to USD45,000/= instead of USD 40,000/ and the taxable percentage payable from 35% to 30%, as given earlier to the Eastern Provincial Councilors.
