Next Sri Lankan Army Commander to be named after 4th July

Colombo, 03 July, (Asiantribune.com):

The next Army Commander would be known after 4th of this month, according to reliable government sources.

At present there is a little unsettled state of affairs in the top bureaucratic set up, as Secretary to the President P. B. Abeykoon has tendered his resignation to President Maithripala Sirisena, and the newly appointed Secretary Austin Fernando would be taking up his position on the 4th of this month.

In the meantime, General Crisanthe De Silva, the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who is also the Commander of the Army, has assumed duties in the CDS office at the BMICH premises on Thursday (29) after a brief religious ceremony.

According to sources, one of the three two star generals are expected to be appointed as Lieutinent General , Army Commander, - Major General Boniface Perera Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Security Forces Commander - West Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe , and the Chief Staffs Major General Mahesh Senanayake.

There is a general perception regarding the likelihood of the appointment going to the Chief of Staffs of the Army Major General Mahesh Senanayake, who has been the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna since 28 January 2016, is also the Colonel of the Regiment, Special Forces.

The appointment of the Army commander rest with the Minister of Defence, President Maithripala Srisena and it is learnt the President before he leaves for Bangladesh on the 7th of this month likely to name the new army commander.
