Mahanayake Theras ready for a discussion on Constitution with TNA

Mahanayake Theras have expressed their willingness and readiness to meet the TNA delegation on the proposed constitutional changes.

Earlier, The Mahanayake Theras of three Nikayas on 4th July, have decided that there is no need to bring in new Constitution. The Maha Sangha led by the Mahanayake Theras of three Nikayas were of the view that a new Constitution will create more conflicts in the country.

They proposed that the government bring in an amendment to the Constitution changing the existing electoral system.

Subsequent to the expressed position of the the Mahanayaka Theras of the three Nikayas, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) together with its Leader, the Leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan have expressed their intention to meet Mahanayakas of the three sects to discuss the new constitution and issues confronted by the Tamil masses states sources of the TNA.

Representatives of TNA say the aspiration of the Tamil masses is for the creation of a new constitution that is acceptable to all the people in the country.

TNA states they would have discussions with the Mahanayakas in connection with the statement made by the Mahanayakas that the country didn’t need a new constitution.

After the Mahanayakas made the statement the TNA requested the Mahanayakas to reconsider their decision regarding the new constitution.

It was told that the Tamil people supported to form the yahapalana government expecting the government to formulate a new constitution to the country.

According to a report, the Asgiriya Chapter Registrar and the Asgiriya Sangha Sabha senior committee member, the Ven. Medagma Dhammananda Thera said he appreciated the decision taken by the TNA parliamentarians including the Opposition leader to meet the Mahanayake Theras.

“We are happy to have met the TNA parliamentarians including the Opposition leader and clear up misunderstandings if any,” he said.

“We have expressed our views on amending the Constitution. It is our responsibility as Sri Lankans to create a conducive environment so that we all can live in peace and harmony.

We regret that the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister's extremist stance on certain matters."

The Maha Sangha opined that the existing electoral system has led to create division among the politicians of same party. They viewed that the electoral system which creates divisions among the members of same party needs to be changed immediately.

The Mahanayake Theras of the Three Nikayas made these decisions following a discussion held at the auditorium of Palipana Sri Chandrananda School of the Asgiriya Maha viharaya in Kandy on 4th of July.

The Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven.Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera, Mahanayake of Ramannya Maha Nikaya Most Ven. Napane Premasiri Thera,

Mahanayake of Amarapura Maha Nikaya and Chief incumbent of Dharmapalaramaya, Mount Lavinia Most Ven Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera and the Anunayake Thera of Malwathu Asgiriya Chapters were present.
