Panama a country very much in the news!

By S.H.Moulana

On receiving the Panama’s president, Juan Carlo Varela, in the White House, US president Donald Trump boasted about construction of Panama Canal.

He said ‘The Panama Canal is doing quite well. I think we did a good job building it, right – a very good job’ Turning to Varela, Trump asked ‘Right?’

Varela responded with a sarcastic smile ‘Yeah, about 100 years ago!’ Trump: ‘Things are going well in Panama.’

If that is all what Trump knew about Panama and Panama Canal, I guess Pakistanis are better informed about Panama although they are thousands of miles away from that country which is linking South and Central America.

Thanks to the Pakistani dailies, which hardly miss a news item on Panama. In fact work on Panama Canal was first started by France in 1881 but stopped due to engineering problem.

The United States took over the project in 1904 – before Donald Trump or his parents were born.

Finally the canal was opened in 1914 – still Donald Trump was not in the making.

Panama is more in the news because it is in the ‘grey list’ for not taking steps to discourage money laundering.

What Panama is for Pakistan is now Central Bank for Sri Lanka.

Readers are well informed of the ‘mother of all banks’ and how it functions.

When I tested a Pakistani employee, working as a carpenter in the gulf, I was amazed to see all what he knew about Panama including its population.

I am sure likewise even our far away villages, those who knew only about People’s Bank now know that there is a Central Bank too!

Thanks to the media once again for educating the ordinary masses and keep them up to date with news related to Panama and our own Central Bank.

I need not say why these two ‘topics’ became ‘talk of the town’ in both countries, your guess is as good as mine!
