Police Sergeant Hemachandra succumbed to gunshot injuries

Jaffna, 23 July, (Asiantribune.com):

Police Sergeant Sarath Hemachandra, attached to the security unit of Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchezhiyan, who was undergoing treatment at the Jaffna General Hospital for gunshot injuries in yesterday’s shootout at Nallur, died early this morning, the Police said.

Seargent Hemachandra died shortly after midnight, despite the efforts of the Intensive Care.

51-year-old Sgt. Hemachandra passed away due to a bullet wound, he sustained in the stomach, which caused blood leakage to his lungs.

The deceased Police Sergeant Hemachandra is from Chillaw and was in Illancheliyan’s Security outfit for nearly 17 years, 'Asian Tribune,' learnt.

They said another Policeman was also injured in the shooting.

Two gunmen, who came on a motorcycle, had grabbed a pistol of one of the two Policemen, who were providing security to the judge’s vehicle, and fired at the Policeman and the Jaffna High Court Judge M. Ilanchezhiyan,
