Maj. Gen Dampath Fernando the new Deputy Chief of Staff

Colombo, 05 August, (Asiantribune.com):

Major General Dampath Fernando has been appointed the new Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army with effect from 4 August 2017. He succeeds Major General Renaka V. Udawatte who retired recently.

He is also the Colonel of the Regiment, the Gemunu Watch.

He joined the Sri Lanka Army (Regular Force) as an Officer Cadet on 27 April 1983 and underwent basic military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyathalawa in the Intake 18. He was commissioned into Gemunu Watch Regiment and started his career as a Second Lieutenant on 7 November 1984.

During his illustrious military career he has held much important position in the army in the fields of operations, training and staff.

As an infantry officer he has successfully commanded two infantry battalions, two infantry brigades and three infantry divisions in the North and East provinces. He has actively taken part in many military operations against the LTTE during the height of Sri Lanka’s terrorist conflict.

After the military victory in 2009, he had to retire from the Army as a ‘victim of circumstances’, but was later reinstated in 2015, by President Maithripala Sirisena.

He is an old boy of De Mazenod College, Kandana.
