CID to Question State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran Soon

Colombo, 09 August, (

The CID is soon expected to question, the authenticity of the video footage, from State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran said State Counsel Nishanth Nagaratnam.

He was responding to Kayts Magistrate M.M. Riyal who queried the delay in questioning State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran, over video footage submitted to the Court by the Defence Counsel of former Jaffna Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Lalith Jayasinghe, in connection with the murder of the schoolgirl Vithya Sivaloganathan.

When the case was taken up on 8th August, at the Kayts Magistrate Court, the attorney general’s department informed the court that permission has been sought from the Speaker of Parliament, to record statements from UNP MP Vijayakala Maheswaran, Women and Child Affairs State State Minister, connection with a video submitted to court.

Earlier, Kayts Magistrate M. M. Riyal has instructed the CID to investigate how the State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran had allegedly instructed the police to release Mahalingam Shashi Kumar alias Swiss Kumar the main suspect in the Vidya Sivaloganathan murder.

The Counsel appearing for former Deputy Inspector General Lalith Jayasinghe informed court that Maheswaran arrived at the place where the main suspect was captured and tied to a electricity post by the residents. The counsel said the State Minister had come to the scene and released him by untying him from the electricity post, without handing him over to the police.

They also questioned as to why the CID, which was conducting investigations into the former Senior DIG, was not investigating the State Minister.

The state minister is alleged of helping the suspect, who was captured by the villagers and tied to a lamp post, to flee from the police.

The Magistrate directed the Attorney General's Department to expedite the investigation into the video footage.

The Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe was arrested on July 15 and remanded on July 16 after being produced before the Kayts acting magistrate who remanded him till July 25.

Interdicted Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe was further remanded by the Kayts magistrate yesterday till August 22 by, for allegedly aiding the release of the main suspect in the murder of student Vidya Sivaloganathan.

State Minister of Child Affairs Maheswaran is expected to appear soon before CID to record a statement on her involvement allowing a suspect of the rape and murder of Jaffna school girl Sivaloganathan Vidya to escape.
