Deniswaran resignation: Emotional Roller Coaster Ride

By K.T.Rajasingham
Jaffna, 16 August, (

The TELO Politburo has again decided to hold its meeting on 19th, in Vavuniya, with a single agenda to decide on its recalcitrant member.

The politburo members expressed their annoyance and disapproval over Deniswaran failuare to resign his position as Minister of Fisheries, Transport, Trade and Commerce, Rural Development, Road Development and Motor Traffic as demanded in the last politburo meeting held on 12th of this month, where it was resolved to reject his ‘grace period plea of 4-month', and flatly told him to tender his resignation within 24 hours.

After the last politburo meeting Deniswaran has told in a few media interviews that he would not resign from his position as a provincial council minister.

Deniswaran also contacted the TELO Leader Selvam Adaikalanathan MP over the telephone and bluntly told him that he will not resign from his position as a minister.

As Deniswaran was very adamant to submit himself to the decision of the party, which he is said to be a member, again the party politburo has summoned him to be present at the forthcoming meeting.

According to a press release by N.Srikantha, general secretary of TELO, “Party high command has decided to hold the politburo meeting to finalize Deniswaran issue.”

Politburo, according information, it is expected to decide on disciplinary action against Deniswaran and remove him from the party and also remove him from being a Councilor of the Northern Provincial Council.

In case TELO decides to take disciplinary action against Deniswaran, then it is the general secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) who has to write to the Department of Elections, as the three constituent parties’ of the Tamil National Alliance contested the 2013 Northern Provincial Council election on the ITAK ticket.

Hence, in case TELO decides to remove the Provincial Council Membership of Deniswaran, then the General Secretary of ITAK is the one, who has to write to Election Department, about Party’s decision to remove him from being a councilor of the provincial council.

Anyhow, it is unclear whether Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi would consider favorably to the request of the TELO to write to the Election Department to remove Deniswaran from his councilor position.

Even in case they agree with the TELO’s disciplinary action, it is unsure whether they will agree to appoint as replacement someone from TELO for the vacant position thus caused, from the Mannar district.
