Expel UNICEF representative for illegal meeting with Tigers -- Sri Lankan expats

Colombo, 12 January, (Asiantribune.com): Protesting against "the serious threat to the nation posed by Western diplomats, UN officials and foreign-funded NGOs who are incessantly interfering in the internal affairs of the Sri Lanka" 25 organisations in the Sri Lankan diaspora have urged the President to take action against those who are trying to subvert Sri Lankan sovereignty.

Citing the example of Afghan -- a government sustained by Western powers -- expelling a UN and an EU employee for holding an illegal meeting with Taleban, the Sri Lankan organisations are insisting that Peter Duamelle, UNICEF Country Representative, should be expelled for meeting the Tamil Tiger ‘political head' Nadesan and other LTTE operatives in Killinochchi.violating his terms and conditions for working in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan expats' organisation state: "Mr. Doumelle's action comes on the heels of several other incidents where UNICEF staff has participated in anti-national activities. UNICEF staff, Lora Scott, Rachele Macini and Patricia Pervez, took part in protest demonstrations - action that was way outside the scope of their legitimate functions. the known in defiance of the GOSL's regulations."

Commending the decision to expel the head of the Berghoff Foundation, an anti-national organisation collaborating with anti-national NGOs, the expats organisations ae demanding "similar action in other cases."

10th January 2008

His Excellency,

The President of Democratic, Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

Colombo,

Sri Lanka

Call for the Immediate Expulsion of the UNICEF Country Head Peter Duamelle

We, patriotic groups around the world, have observed with dismay the serious threats to our national security posed by Western diplomats, UN officials and foreign-funded NGOs who are incessantly interfering in Sri Lanka's internal affairs and openly colluding with the LTTE. The growing number of incidents involving foreign powers and their agents trying to subvert Sri Lankan sovereignty calls for urgent action.

The GOSL's decision to expel the head of the neo-colonial Berghoff Foundation is a commendable step in this direction. We demand similar action in other cases, particularly, that of Mr. Peter Duamelle, UNICEF Country Representative who, in defiance of the GOSL's regulations, met in December with Tamil Tiger ‘political head' Nadesan and other LTTE operatives in Killinochchi.

Immediately following Duamelle's visit, the LTTE issued an outrageous press release, making it very clear that Mr. Duamelle's visit to the Wanni was orchestrated to give the LTTE an opportunity to legitimize its false claims of no longer using child soldiers. The press release also claimed that "The UNICEF Head said that his visit was an introductory meeting with the LTTE Political Head. Among the topics discussed was the work of the United Nations in general in the Tamil homeland." The tone and connotations of the statement were crafted to impress that the UNICEF chief was paying the customary visit of a newly-appointed diplomat to the head of state, in this case, the head of the so-called Tamil homeland. This is a serious threat to Sri Lankan sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mr. UNICEF also tried to smuggle to the Tigers nearly 6000 ready-to-eat meal packs. There is also the issue of over $100m – which UNICEF provided to the LTTE front TRO for the alleged rehabilitationof children it had abducted and trained to carry out its terrorist war.

These facts warrant Mr. Doumelle's immediate expulsion.
A splendid example has now been set by Afghanistan on how to deal with international bodies that defy a nation's laws and collude with its enemies. The present Afghan government was created by Western powers through their war on Islamic terror and is today maintained by Western funds and supported diplomatically by the West. Recently, the Afghan government arrested two Westerners, one UN employee and the other, an employee of the European Union, for having an illegal meeting with the Taleban and promptly deported them.
Patriotic Sri Lankan groups around the world have expended immense time, energy and private means countering the false propaganda put out by these antinational groups while the solution is so easy within Sri Lanka. We, therefore, insist the government which is fighting a war against the LTTE a brutal group more barbarous than the Taleban to take a lesson from the Western dependent government of Afghanistan, and stand firm against the new Western colonialism. In addition to the immediate deportation of the UNICEF representative who defies our laws and collaborates with our enemies, we demand that the government freezes the finances and close the phony foreign-funded NGOs (Indians call them FGOs Foreign Government Organisations), who interfere with our sovereignty. Our country has been kicked about enough, and the democratic will of our people so thwarted by foreign forces, that self respect demands these minimal actions.
