New York composer dedicates anthem to SPB

With over 35,000 songs sung in different Indian languages for the past 50 years, SP Balasubrahmanyam or SPB is considered a living god of Indian music.

New York Raja, a singer, composer, teacher and an ardent fan of the legendary SPB who grew up listening to many of SPB's soulful renderings in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi has composed a song with the title SPB Anthem “I wanted to dedicate this song with love, affection and respects to my mentor SPB,” he said.

The album was released on India's Independence Day in Times Square, the heart of New York.

When New York-Raja came up with this idea the popular veteran film director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao gave him a very good idea to include National Integration as a theme and portray SPB as he has sung many different languages, many genres of songs. Poet Kavivarman, wrote soulful lyrics very aptly for the melody composed by New York Raja.The title SPB Anthem was suggested by the legendary singer KS Chithra.

SPB Anthem Song was composed based on three main Raagas, Dharmavati, Hamsanadham and Kalyani.
Popular movie playback singer Krish who has performed with New York Raja many times in New York, New Jersey and in Toronto has given his voice.

Krish is also a very accomplished composer arranger, lyricist, recordist, keyboard and rhythm programer. In this song, all the music arrangements, programming are all done by Krish.

Celebrity singers KS Chithra, Krish, Ramesh Vinayakam (also a composer), Abishek Iyer, Hariharan Ananthu, Saiesan, Luxmi, Sahithya and Kavya have supported this song along with New York Raja.

“SPB’s eyes were filled with tears many times while listening to the song in appreciation of the melody, gratitude and the good gesture done by the entire team,” said Raja.

New York Raja, as he is popularly known as is originally called Gururaja Rao is a music composer/teacher, born and lived in Chennai for 30 years, moved to New York in 1993. He then started recording and releasing many private albums devotional, pop, classical with many a celebrity singers and musicians of the Indian film and classical music world

He then moved to Canada in 2001. Songs from his private album Oru Minnal, were adapted in the Feature Film Mathi, produced and directed by Sri Rangan in Toronto. SAREGA Music School of Fine Arts a not for profit corporation was founded by him in 2001 and to teach popular film songs in Keyboard and guitar for the Indian and Sri Lankan Community.

He was a recipient of ‘Citizen of the Year 2012’ awarded by the city of Brampton in Canada for his services to the Community Children and Youth.

The legendary composer MS Viswanathan appreciated New York Raja many a times on his compositions especially the one composed on him. . New York-Raja has performed extensively in the USA, UK and in Toronto. He has performed many times in Chennai with the Oscar Winning Composer AR Rahman.
