A. H. M. Azwer passed away

Colombo, 30 August, (Asiantribune.com):

Former Minister A. H. M. Azwer passed away yesterday at a private hospital in Colombo. He was 80 years of age at the time of his demise.

He was sick and had been receiving treatment for his ailment for a few weeks.

The funeral is to be held at his house No. 4, Bathiya Mawatha, Dehiwala.

H. M. Azwer was a Sri Lankan politician, and a Former National List member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Azwer was connected with the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa – a well-knit link.

Even recently, Mahinda Rajapaksa paid visit at the private hospital where azwer was hospitalized and wished him well.

He served as a National List MP on numerous occasions.

He was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), and had affiliations with the United National Party (UNP) prior to that.

Azwer entered Parliament in 1989 as a National List MP, functioned as a Monitoring MP for Ministry of Mass Media and Information, functioned as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the Minister of State for Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.

Azwer started his career as a journalist at the Lake House Thinakaran newspaper in 1960 and later joined the Chintamani and Thinapathi newspapers of Independent Group of Newspapers.

He has also functioned as the Editor of several newspapers.
