Teachers’ Association blames the unruly behavior of a group of students at the Eastern University

Batticaloa, 02 September, (Asiantribune.com):

Teachers’ Association of Eastern University blames the students for disruption in academic activities in the University.

Association has expressed its displeasure over the unruly behavior of a group of students at the Eastern University located at Chenkaladi.

The Teachers Association of the Eastern University pointed out that, since 08.08.2017 all the academic activities at Eastern University have been suspended until further notice due to forcibly occupying the senate building only by a group of students and as a result, all the academic and administrative activities of the University have been crippled.

“It is understood that the prime reason for the forcible retention in the senate building of these students is to withdraw the punishment imposed by the administration for the violation of rules and regulations against ragging and other misbehavior activities in the university premises,“ The Teachers Association observed.

“Apart from the withdrawal of the punishments of their colleagues, students also engaged in protest demanding hostel facilities to the 2nd year students. “

The Teachers Association clarifies that, “even though some universities have provided hostel facility for the 2nd year students with the available resources, due to lack of space in the existing hostels in the university premises, hostel facility couldn’t provide to the 2nd year students inside the university premises.

“ However university administration has made arrangements in the vicinity of the University for the Hostel to the 2nd year students and this information had already conveyed to the respective students. But the students are refusing to reside outside the university premises.

“It is also pointed out that when the said students entered to the university in the 1st year of study, this information had already been conveyed to the students and their parents and they too had extended their consent by placing their signature in the relevant document.

Even though, on 21.08.2017 we made a request to the students initially to vacate the senate building to find a viable solution for the crisis it was totally ignored and still they are forcibly residing in the senate building and this abnormal situation in turn has led to both academic and non-academic staff to refrain from their routine heir regret duties and we for see this situation as a violation of fundamental rights - The Teachers Association .

The Teachers Association has expressed Also it is very regret over the prevailing situation which has adversely affected the forthcoming convocation which has been scheduled to be held on 9th of September 2017.

It further noted “Even though all the first year students have been provided with hostel facilities accompanying with other students and demanding the hostel facility is a punishable offence.”

In this context, we the Teachers Union of Eastern University, hereby vehemently condemned the unethical behavior as well as unfair requests only by a group of students.

Teachers Union of Eastern University has appealed to the parents to call back their children from the University, since the administration has suspended all the academic activities until further notice,

Teachers Union of Eastern University request all the relevant authorities to expedite the necessary action to ensure the smooth functioning of the university.
