Swiss Police shot and killed a Sri Lankan Tamil

A 38-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, Subramanian Haran, from Ward No: 6, Puthukudiyiruppu, Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka was shot and killed by Swiss police on Saturday after an allegation that he charged at two other asylum seekers with knives, law enforcement officials said.

Subramaniam Haran, father of two children, sought asylum in Switzerland in 2015 and living in a canton of Ticino, for the last two years in a refugee asylum centre.

According to an Agency news report, Police was alerted to a brawl involving several asylum seekers in the town of Brissago on Saturday afternoon.

Officers had been called in to break up a fight in Brissago, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, and were on the ground floor of a building when the Sri Lankan attacked the other people, Police said in a statement.

Police in the town of Brissago in Switzerland's Italian-speaking canton of Ticino said they were called to a refugee centre, after a report of an altercation after midnight.

Officers say they escorted two asylum seekers into the building, where they were rushed by a man brandishing two knives.

"To guarantee the safety of all those present, a cantonal police officer fired his gun and seriously injured the aggressor," Ticino police said in a statement.

Despite first aid, the man died at the scene, the police said.

An investigation has been opened into the shooting, they added.
