Rajeev Rajendran’s body cremated

Jaffna, 17 October, (

Rajeev Rajendran’s body was cremated today evening at the family cemetery at Meesalai South, Meesalai.

On 2nd October evening, Rajeev Rajendran -32 year old Tamil Asylum Seeker in Australia, died by committing suicide, in the offshore detention center at Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, and the family members approached the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry to help in repatriating the body to Sri Lanka.

The body of the deceased arrived yesterday evening from Ports Morsby and was deposited at the Negambo Hospital mortuary.

Yesterday evening, Father Rajendran and mother Valarmathy were at the Negombo hospital and took charge of the body of their son and brought it by road to Meesalai.

Hundreds of relatives participated in the funeral and the funeral pyre was lit by the father Rajendran.

It was a very sorrowful end of a Tamil Asylum Seeker, who sought asylum in Australia.

‘Asian Tribune’ while condemning the approach of Australian government regarding its asylum giving policy, urges Australia to repatriate all those asylum seekers back to their countries of origin, instead of allowing them to languish in the offshore asylum centers, for years and years.
