SLFP to fight it out for morsels left in plates

By K.T.Rajasingham
Jaffna, 21 October, (

Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna have decided to fight it out in the Jaffna district, to whatever morsels left in the plates.

In the wake of the visit of a frontline leader of Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna (SLPP) Basil Basil Rajapaksa, to promote his new found party in the midst of the Tamils in the Jaffna district, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) under the leadership of Maithripala Srisena has now taken the cue suddenly to reorganize his party in the Jaffna district.

On the recommendation of the Party’s Pointsman, President Maitripala Srisena on 25th April, appointed three new district organizers to the party to the Jaffna district.

Earlier, Ankajan Ramanathan, party list MP was the sole Chief Organizer of the SLFP in the Jaffna District.

But by the appointment of the new district organizers, his position became untenable.

However, now it is learnt that he is fighting to consolidate his position in the Udupiddy electorate by managing to drive away the newly appointed party organizer S. Akiladas from Udupiddy to the Islands – Kayts.

The 3-day visit of Basil Rajapaksa, starting from 30th September, was found challenging, as the SLFP old-timers showed inclination in supporting the former strongman and SLFP found its position in the Peninsula slipping under its feet and President Maithripala Srisena, who is also the President of the SLFP, was advised to arrest the embarrassing position of the SLFP in the midst of the Tamils, and last week he appointed four more district organizers for the Jaffna district.

A total of eight SLFP Jaffna district organizers are at present in the district, but according to political analyst, the SLFP, as well as the SLPP organizers in Jaffna - green horns, won’t be a match to the Tamil National Alliance, the lone UNP MP, or to Parliamentarian Douglas Devananda.

It is reliably learnt that SLPP might coalesced with Douglas Devananda to contest in the local government and in the Provincial Council elections.

But, as far as SLFP is concerned, has to slot it out all alone in the district, and it might not augur well.
