President Srisena to Visit Qatar

Colombo, 24 October, (

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to arrive in Doha on 24th evening on an official visit to Qatar.

President Sirisena left for Doha for a two-day official visit this afternoon accompanied by a twenty-member delegation.

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will meet the Sri Lankan president on Thursday at the Emir Diwan where they will hold talks on bilateral relations and ways to promote them.

The visit will feature the signing of three important agreements which were approved by Cabinet last week.

The main would be the agreement between Sri Lanka and Qatar on energy cooperation. Qatar, a major oil and gas producing country has shown interest in supporting oil and gas exploration activities in the country.

In addition the President will also sign an agreement on cooperation, diplomatic training and research between the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lankan and the Foreign Ministry of Qatar.

President Sirisena will also seek to sign an agreement between Sri Lanka and Qatar on bilateral cooperation in water supply and waste management to implement such projects in the Puttalam and Ampara districts.

President Sirisena will also meet Sri Lankan community residing in Qatar to discuss their grievance and concerns.

Earlier, The Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, who was on a South Asia tour, visited Sri Lanka briefly in March 2015 on the invitation of President Sirisena.

During the visit, the Emir of Qatar, accompanied by a high-level delegation, held bilateral consultations with the Sri Lankan President.

During the discussions, the Qatari leader had pledged financial assistance to resolve the drinking water problem of those in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The Qatari Government has also expressed its willingness to support gas and oil exploration activities in Sri Lanka.

Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Sri Lanka was established in 1976.
