7 candidates of ITAK contesting in the Chavakachcheri Urban Council announce of withdrawing

Jaffna, 16 December, (Asiantribun.com):

Seven candidates of the Ilankai Tamail Arasu Kadchchi, (ITAK) whose names have been included in the party nomination list for the Chavakachcheri Urban council have announced of withdrawing from contesting in the election.

They have informed their intention of withdrawing from the contest in a letter addressed to ITAK president Mavai S. Senathirajah. That letter was sent yesterday through K.Arunthavapalan, the leader of Chavakachcheri branch of the ITAK.

Candidates namely – 1. Nalliah Suntharalingham,2. Kandiah Myilvakanam, 3. K.Satkunathevan, T. Pawlina Subodhini, SS. Arulanantham, V.Sathiyaledchumy, and K.Tharshan have signed the letter informing that they are withdrawing their candidature of the party for the Chavakachcheri Urban Council.

Out of those candidates withdrawing from the local government elections, 5 of them contesting for representations in the wards and 2 from the proportionate representation.

According to the election commission, a party should file 21 names for the Chavakachcheri Urban Council election.

11 names to contest for representations in 11 wards and 10 on proportionate representation and to finally elect a council of 18 including Chairman and Vice Chairman and the Council would include 11 elected members and seven selected under proportionate representation.

Earlier in filing the ITAK nomination – a conflict situation arose between ITAK Chavaachcheri branch president K.Arunthavabalan and Northern Provincial Councilor K.Sayanthan.

Both of then prepared their own candidates lists and were seen involved in a very heated argument at the ITAK office in Jaffna.

At the nick of time, just before the close of the nomination for the Chavakachcheri Urban Council, the nomination list prepared by Syanthan was finally filed at the election office on behalf of the ITAK.

In that list of 21 names in ITAK list included 2 names of the TELO, but not a single person from PLOTE, it was alleged.

It is learnt even if the seven persons included in the ITAK nomination list announce of withdrawing, it would not cause any problems to the ITAK nomination list. Those 7 names would also appear in the ballot papers of the Chavakachcheri urban Council.
