ITAK On The Sly Absolved ‘Crusaders For Democracy’ – A Former Militant Group

By K.T.Rajasingham
Jaffna, 30 December, (Asiantribune.com):

Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi on the sly, has absolved the “Crusaders for Democracy” – the former militant LTTE cadres and has given them an opportunity to contest in the local government elections, in the North, as candidates of their Party.

It is learnt that ITAK has not discussed this development of including the former LTTE militants with them and about giving them an opportunity to contest in the local government elections in the Northern Province with the constituent parties of TNA – TELO & PLOTE.

Sivanathan Navindra alias Venthan, Former head of the Personal Security Division of the slain Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, and the present leader of the ‘Crusaders For Democracy’, told ‘Asian Tribune’ that ITAK has allocated 33 seats to contest in the local government elections in the North – Jaffna district, as well as in the Vanni region.

Venthan told that he has been given the opportunity to contest for the position of Chairman for the Point Pedro Urban Council – a prestigious position and Point Pedro is considered a leading city in the North, next to Jaffna.

When asked whether ‘Crusaders of Democracy’ has become part and parcel of the Tamil National Alliance, he responded saying that a couple of days ago, a workshop was held in Jaffna for those contesting the elections in the ITAK tickets in the Jaffna District ad in that workshop, the ITAK leader Mavai S. Senathirajah made a cursory remark, that ‘Crusaders For Democracy,’ as the fourth constituent party of the TNA.

However, so far ITAK has not publicly made any announcement regarding ‘Crusaders For Democracy’ as one of the constituent party of the TNA.

For the Parliamentary General elections held on 17 August 2015, “Crusaders for Democracy” which was at that time led by N.Vidyatharan contacted the Tamil National Alliance to consider them as a constituent group of the TNA and grant tickets from TNA, to contest the general elections.

Vidiyatharan’s request was rejected and they were branded as Sri Lankan Army informants.

After the Parliamentary General Elections, ‘Crusaders For Democracy’ began to ignore Vidiyatharan and the leadership has been taken over by Sivanathan Navindra alias Venthan, 42, who has lost his right leg in a battle against the Sri Lankan Security Forces some 22 years ago.

Once ‘Crusaders For Democracy’ has come into the hands of the former LTTE militants, it is learnt that, they had more than 4 meetings with C.V.K Sivangnam, the Deputy Leader of ITAK and the Chairman of the Assembly of the Northern Provincial Council regarding their political agenda and future.

As the result of the discussions they had with C.V.K Sivangnam, their request to contest in the local government elections, as part of ITAK has been favorably considered.

Still it is not clear the real reason behind ITAK absolving the ‘Crusaders For Democracy,’ as a constituent body of the ITAK?
