Sri Lanka: Eid to be celebrated on 16th Saturday

Colombo, 15 June, (Asiantribune.com):

Eid moon has not been sighted in Sri Lanka, confirmed the Colombo Grand Mosque. With this development, Eid in Sri Lanka will be celebrated on Saturday. In the meantime, Sri Lanka Government has already declared today (15 June) as a holiday.

However, some sects observed Ramadan a day later, from May 18. Those sects will observe Eid al-Fitr on Sunday if the moon is not sighted tomorrow

. However, the possibility remains unlikely as new moon will mostly be sighted in all parts of the world.

Since the crescent has been sighted in Maldives, Brunei and Fiji, Eid will be celebrated on June 15.

Eid-al-Fitr or Eid is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting and prayer.

Many Muslims attend communal prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon) and give zakat al-fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid al-Fitr.
