US To Announce Withdrawal From UN Human Rights Council

Geneva, 19 June, (Asiantribune.com):

The US is expected to announce its withdrawal from UN Human Rights Council later today, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Reuters reported that the US is edging closer to quitting the United Nations rights body after talks on an attempted reform of the organization failed to meet Washington’s demands with anti-Israeli bias cited as a major obstacle.

Sources speaking on a condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the US’s retreat from the organization appeared to be “imminent” but no further details were provided. Diplomatic sources added that it was not a matter of if, but when.

The new session of the Geneva UN Human Rights Council forum opened on Monday 18 June and will end on July 6.

“We are still moving ahead with our engagement for the coming session,” a separate US official confirmed amid speculation of a pull-out.
