Price of a rice food packet and a cup of tea reduced in line with reduction in gas prices

The All Island Canteen Owners Association says the price of a packet of rice and a cup of tea will be reduced in line with the reduction in gas prices.

Asela Sampath, National Organizer of The All Island Canteen Owners Association said that the price of a cup of tea and a packet of rice are expected to be reduced by five and ten rupees respectively in line with the reduction in gas price.

The Canteen Owners Association increased the price of a cup of tea and a packet of rice on the 27th of April this year, in line with the increase in gas prices.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Authority said a search operation will be launched to identify retailers who sell gas cylinders at higher prices.

The Authority said it will resort to legal action against such retailers.

The price of a 12.5kg domestic gas cylinder was reduced by Rs.138 from yesterday midnight.

Accordingly, a gas cylinder previously priced at 1,676 rupees presently being sold at 1,538 rupees from yesterday onwards.

Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Hasitha Thilakaratne said the price of other gas cylinders are expected to be reduced by a similar margin.

The price of a gas cylinder is being amended following recommendations by the Cost of Living Committee.
