CCC castigates a minister's attack on Rupawahini as despicable conduct

By Quintus Perera - Asian Tribune

Colombo, 21 January, (Asiantribune.com): The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce views with concern the regular reports on threats on media personnel, who figured in bringing to the attention of the public, the recent despicable conduct of a Minister of the Government (with a track record of such conduct) at the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.

CCC indicated that they appreciate the attitude of media personnel and agencies responsible for alerting the public of this dangerous trend of an apparent flagrant abuse of power and the unfortunate consequence of the public taking the law into their hands. The freedom of the media should be preserved, protected and upheld as a sacred institution in a just and democratic society.

They indicated that they were heartened by the Government’s decision to inquire into the incident and maintain that those abusing power in public office should be dealt with openly to serve as a deterrent to others. CCC also call on the law enforcement agencies, and the IGP, in particular, to expeditiously act on complaints made by those who are subject to threats and intimidation so that the public has absolute confidence in the outcome and are not led to believe that there is complicity on the part of state agencies as well.

CCC call upon the Government, led by the President, to stress on the ministerial team, the example that they must set on good governance, which is worthy of emulation by the many organizations of this country, including, most importantly, the seats of learning such as schools and universities of the country.
