One Person Died in Shooting

Colombo, 28, October, (Asiantribune.com):

One person is dead after Petroleum Minister Arjun Ranatunga’s bodyguard opened fire in Colombo, amidst political crisis in Sri Lanka, reported AFP.

According to an AFP report, a mob loyal to President Sirisena tried to take Ranatunga hostage, following which his bodyguards opened fire.

In the meantime, Ruwan Gunasekara, Police Spokesman, told reporters that a bodyguard for Arjuna Ranatunga, Wickremesinghe’s petroleum minister, fired live rounds at a crowd of people loyal to Sirisena when they attempted to prevent the dismissed minister from entering his office at the state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Police have arrested the guard who opened fire, Gunasekara said, adding that a probe was under way.

The incident was the first report of serious violence since Sirisena’s Friday decision to replace Wickremesinghe with Mahinda Rajapaksa, a former president accused of human rights abuses and corruption.
