Former Petroleum Minister Arjuna Ranatunga was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division

Colombo, 29 October, (Asiantribune.com):

Former Petroleum Minister Arjuna Ranatunga was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) a short while ago over the yesterday’s shooting incident at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda which left 1 dead and 2 injured.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) arrested Ranatunga after he was accused of being involved in the shooting incident in which one person was killed.

Ranatunga is expected to be produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court today, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

As the protest unfolded on Sunday, Ranatunga had to be escorted off the CPC premises by special security forces after a security guard from the Minister’s security team opened fire at the group of protesting CPC workers.

Police said the security guard who had opened fire had been arrested immediately.

CPC Trade Union workers later Sunday launched a strike leading to long queues at petrol stations across the island.
However following Ranatunga’s arrest, the CPC said the strike had been called off.

The violent incident erupted as Sri Lanka faces a severe political crisis with President Maithripala Sirisena sacking his Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe last Friday and appointing former President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Wickremesinghe said the move was illegal and has called for Parliament to be convened immediately to prove his majority.

A new caretaker government is expected to be sworn in later Monday or Tuesday.
