Alternate places identified for illegal occupiers of pavements

Colombo, 14 February, (Asiantribune.com):

In response to a section of the newspapers calling for alternate arrangements in place of the unauthorized structures from pavements, Western Province Governor M. Azath S. Salley insisted that such illegal occupiers will have to go to their alternate places already allocated to them.

During a press conference on Monday, the Governor said that notices have been issued to owners of unauthorized structures on the pavements that it will be removed forthwith and alternate places have been found for them.

TheGovernor also said notices have been issued to unauthorized occupiers of the pavement in the vicinity of the Khettarama Cricket Stadium. The actions will be continued in other places too, he added.

He pointed out that the Chief Secretary of the Provincial Council has sent a circular to the heads of all local bodies to take immediate action against those unauthorized structures. The Governor stressed: “Pavements are meant for pedestrians and roads are meant for motorists.”

The Governor said that those who have occupied the pavements illegally were identified by the government authorities such as the Police, Ministry of Defense, Urban Development Authority and the University of Ceylon. “They were given identity cards for this purpose,” he noted, adding that they were allotted alternate places in areas such as Fifth Cross Street and Front Street in Colombo 11.

The former Colombo Mayor A.J. M. Muzzamil did not allow them to evacuate from the pavements due to vested interests to support his wife’s election campaign, which continued to block the pavements for pedestrians and made the city uglier, the governor said.

Governor Salley pointed out that the ugly sight is visible in the vicinity of the Oval and Khettarama cricket stadiums in Colombo.

“ We are determined to clean up this mess and make the cities in the western province more beautiful and the illegal occupiers have to go to their assigned places ,” he stressed.
