WP Governor’s staff pledges to combat narcotics scourge

Staff members of the Office of the Western Province Governor Azath Salley took their oaths of allegiance to President Maithripala Sirisena’s Bak Maha Divuruma (National Pledge to eradicate drug menace) in Rajagiriya on Wednesday.

In the absence of Governor Salley, his staff members took their oaths of allegiance before the Secretary to the Western Province Governor, P.Somasiri at his office simultaneously when President Sirisena administered the oaths at the Independence Square in Colombo on Wednesday.

Representatives of all religions, members of the government and opposition members of the Parliament, governors of the provinces, chief ministers and representatives will join this oath taking against drugs.

The drug prevention national programme titled “Mathin Nidahas Ratak” is being successfully implemented across the country with the support of all the parties, with the aim of achieving economic and social prosperity for Sri Lanka while accomplishing sustainable development goals.

The President believes that the illegal drug trade, which has spread like a major menace, could not be controlled only through taking illicit drugs into custody by security forces, raids or taking legal actions alone and the time has come to eliminate this threat through implementing a broad attitude change initiate from family to the entire society.

Governor Salley, who attended the national event at the Independence Square told the media that the programme calls for concerted and consecrated action to combat the drug scourge . “It heartening to note that with the persistent efforts of President Sirisena, we were able to destroy 769kgs of narcotics under the personal supervision of the president,” he said, pointing out that this was the first time that such a haul of narcotics was seized and destroyed under the drug prevention national programme titled ‘ Mathin Nidahas Ratak.’
