WP Governor dismisses Kabeer, Wimal's allegations

Colombo, 28 April, (Asiantribune,cm):

Western Province Governor Azath Salley dismissed the slanderous allegations made by Highways Minister Kabeer Hashim and Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, who alleged he had influenced to release the two suspects who broke Buddha statues in Mawanella in April.

The governor was speaking at a press conference held in his office on Friday, to outline the current security situation in his province due to unrest caused by the recent bomb blasts in five of the six affected places.

He lamented that at a time of this nature, politicians are trying to tarnish his image for political gains. Quoting the Ministry of Defense, Salley said the two suspects M.N.M Nafreed and Naveed were released on April 9, by the Mawanella Magistrate and the Ministry further confirmed that no undue influence was exercised by any outside party.

“ Let us shed our political differences at a time of a calamity of this nature and pool our resources to fight against terrorism which has no bounds,” Salley stressed, pointing out that extremists of any groups should be eradicated from this shore for a peaceful living on this island.

He said not to lobby for a change.

Regarding the ban of ‘Burqa’, face cover for women, Salley said that he had sent a directive to 1,385 schools in his province not allow any students wearing Burqa.

He added, even the parents who are wearing Burqa will not be allowed to enter the school premises, he concluded.
