Soup of the soup....

By S.H.Moulana

During my school days I was a very frequent visitor to the Colombo Public Library and my preference there was to read always humor filled stories as I liked comedies in films and dramas. We all know how the Ukrainian people preferred to elect a Comedian, Volodymyr Zelensky as their current president, who won a resounding victory. They did not stop there and went onto seizing corrupt politicians and throwing them into big garbage bins.

My interest for humorous stories took me to Mulla Nasreddin a Turkish born satirist who lived in the 13th century. The book ‘The Turkish Jester’ one of many books published of him carried number of his stories. One of these stories was captioned ‘Soup of the soup’. It goes on…’A kinsman came to see Nasreddin from the countryside, and brought a duck.

Nasreddin was grateful, made a soup out of it and shared it with his guest. Several days later another visitor arrived. He was a friend of the man who brought the duck Nasreddin fed him as well. This happened several times. Nasreddin’s home had become like a restaurant for out of town visitors.

Everyone was a friend at some removes of the original donor of the duck.

Finally, Nasreddin was exasperated. One day there was a knock at the door and a stranger appeared. ‘I am the friend of the friend of the friend of the man who brought you the duck from the countryside’ he said.

‘Come in’ said Nasreddin. They sat at the table and Nasreddin asked his wife to bring the soup. When the guest tasted it, it seemed to be nothing more than warm water. ‘What sort of soup is this?’ the stranger asked. Nasreddin said ‘It is the soup of the soup of the soup of the duck’.

Even in Nasreddin’s death he still makes visitors to his grave laugh. There is a huge gate in front of the grave with a big padlock but no walls around!
