JVP not contesting in eastern local elections

Colombo, 25 January, (Asiantribune.com): Janatha Vimukthi Perumuna while welcoming the planned elections for 9 local government bodies in the East has decided not to contest.

Somawansa Amerasinghe talking to Asian Tribune said that holding elections is a good democratic move. He said, “We welcome Government holding the elections.”

However, he said that the time given to prepare for the nine local body elections was not enough.

The Leader of the JVP also said that his party has not been active in those parts of the east earlier and they are yet to build their political bases in those areas where elections were scheduled to be held.

He added that it is not the proper political approach to contest for the sake of contesting in the elections.

The nominations for the following 9 local Government bodies started on 14 January and it ends by 12.00 noon 25th January (today).

Elections are to be held for the following Local Government bodies in the Batticaloa district:

1. Batticoloa Municipal Council
2. Eravur Pradeshiya Sabha
3. Korelepaththu Pradeshiya Sabha
4. North Korelepaththu Pradeshiya Sabha
5. Southern Manmunei and Eruvilpaththu Pradeshiya Sabha
6. Manmunei Pradeshiya Sabha
7. Western Manmunei Pradeshiya Sabha
8. South-Western Manmunei Pradeshiya Sabha
9. Porathivupaththu Pradeshiya Sabha
