Mahesh Senanayake Appointed 4 Star General

Colombo, 21 August, (Asiantribune,cm):

The outgoing Sri Lankan Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, has been promoted to the rank of General by President Maithripala Sirisena with effect from August 17.

He was appointed as the Army Commander on July 4, 2017, and was the 22nd Commander of the Army.
He was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on October 16, 1981,

General Senanayake has held a number of appointments, including the extra regimental employment at the Sri Lanka Military Academy as an instructing officer. He also served as the Regimental Center Commandant of the Special Forces Regiment, Commander 211 Infantry Brigade - Vavuniya, Commander Special Forces Brigade and the General Officer Commanding 52 Division - Varani, Jaffna.

Mahesh Senanayake had actively contributed to almost all the major military operations, conducted in the North and East of Sri Lanka during a span of more than 30 years.

General Mahesh Senanayake Tuesday (20) afternoon paid a courtesy call on the President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat.

President Sirisena during the cordial discussions that ensued commended the excellent service of the outgoing Commander and wished him good luck with all his future endeavors. General Senanayake acknowledged the cooperation the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces extended to him during his tenure of office.

Towards the end of the cordial meeting, the outgoing Commander presented a special souvenir to the President Sirisena.

Earlier on the 20th August, a formal military salute and a dignified ceremony was held at the Army Headquarters premises and the Commander’s office this morning (20) saluted the outgoing 22nd Commander of the Army, General Mahesh Senanayake in keeping with military traditions after he symbolically handed over the replica of the ornamental Baton to his successor, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, the 23rd Commander of the Army who was appointed by the President Maithripala Sirisena, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
