Karuna moves from the East to prison in London

London, 26 January, ( former commander of Prabhakaran's LTTE, Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, and better known as Colonel Karuna, was sentenced for nine month imprisonment in London by Mr. Justice McDowell. He was found guilty of holding false identity documents. Karuna sat behind a protective screen inside the courtroom and listened without expression as the judge handed down the sentence.

Karuna broke away from Prabhkaran accusing him of discriminating against the Tamils of the East. He said that Prabhkaran gave all the plum jobs in the LTTE to Jaffna Tamils of the north. After breaking away in 2004, he led his own outfit.

IN court Karuna pleaded guilty to a criminal offence of possessing a false passport.

Karuna's lawyer, David Philips, told the media after the judgment that he might apply for political asylum after serving the prison sentence.

He added that immigration officials will not entertain an application for asylum until the sentencing takes place for a criminal case.

Mr. Philips said that Karuna would want to stay in the UK as 'his wife and three children already live' in the country. They live in the wealthy suburb of Kensington.

It is reported that human rights groups now want the British government to prosecute Colonel Karuna for human right abuses, most of which wee committed when he was serving under Prabbakaran.
