T/20 Champions whitewashed by our youngsters!

By S.H.Moulana

Pakistan's leading daily 'DAWN' had this to say in its lead story: 'The results were only the icing on the cake. The actual cake was the successful hosting of a guest that had literally been hurt under our care a decade ago.

They came, they stayed, they left and nothing untoward happened. It’s clichéd to say this, but cricket did win.

It was under threat from the horrific past, some scheming neighbours and our own internal incompetency, but the gentleman’s sport still found a way.

The Lankans stayed in Pakistan for 13 days, played five matches and showed the world that this is not the Pakistan of the past, particularly when it comes to the security situation. Now bring on Australia and England.'

I consider our senior players’ decline to join the tour team to Pakistan is a blessing in disguise! How else we could have detected these young hidden talents who outplayed the home team, the T/20 World Champions with a whitewash. In the series each match provided an up and coming batting star and in this final match we had young Fernando who scored 78 match winning runs in just 48 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes with a strike rate of 162.

From the bowlers Silva with 3 for 20, Kumara with 2 for 24 and Rajitha 1 for 17 were really outstanding in that department.

Rameez Raja recalled Sri Lanka’s World Cup victory in the same ground in Lahore in 1996, beating Australia by 7 wickets.

Pakistani fans and the media have expressed their gratitude to Sri Lankan team for undertaking the tour despite threats from some source. We are confident that our cricket board will recognize the talent shown by the young cricketers during the tour and reward the boys by selecting them for future tours too.

Now let’s organize a great welcome back home on their arrival with a grand motorcade. We urge the print and electronic media to live up to the occasion and provide wide coverage.

We thank Pakistan for treating our boys exceptionally well and hope other countries too will follow Sri Lanka’s example by touring the cricket starved country.
