World Food Programme (WFP) Celebrates 50 Years of Partnership

Colombo, 11 November, (Asiantribune.com):

The United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) began the cooperation formally in 1968 has successfully completed the 50 Years of partnership in 2019 and celebrated its success with the Government of Sri Lanka.

The main implementing partner is Ministry of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs and the event was organized on 8th November 2019 at Miloda.

Under the WFP, support was extended through food aid, and the project assistance included emergency assistance, relief, recovery and technical assistance. The programmatic interventions included feeding people during emergencies such as Tsunami, natural disasters and conflict situations, support nutrition and home-grown school meal programme, undertake food security assessment, promoting food production to improve capacity of vulnerable and promoting food security through small holder farmers and addressing malnutrition. The programmatic interventions also supported to respond in terms of climatic shocks, climate adaptation, community resilience and women empowerment.

The United Nation’s World Food Programme is aimed at strengthening national capacity to end hunger and malnutrition to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 2 and 17. The contribution made through WFP is remarkable in terms of emergencies, climate change, disaster and assistance to vulnerable groups.

Secretary, Ministry of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs Mr.V.Sivagnanasothy, commended that WFP is always people centric with strong people participation, county priority oriented, learning from past experiences with national ownership and leadership and aligned to the national system. A commemoration stamp was released to mark the success of 50 years of Partnership.

The UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Hanna Singer, WFP Country Director Ms.Brenda Batton, Ambassadors and High Commissioners, Secretaries to the Ministries, Additional Secretaries, District Secretaries, Chief Secretaries, Director General, External Resources Department and Director General, National Planning Department, Senior Government Officials and development partners participated in the event.
