Honesty does pay

By S.H.Moulana

I read with interest a report in local press here ‘Snag-hit ATM rains riyals’ long time ago. It was sad to note how that malfunctioning ATM attracted the attention of some dishonest people.

The report then made me to recall a similar incident that had occurred in Hampshire, United Kingdom and was reported in foreign media.

According to those reports, hundreds of people cashed in after an ATM machine began paying out double the amount one requested for. The bank reportedly said that they could keep the unexpected windfall.

Such incidents make me wonder why don’t some realize the importance of honesty. William Shakespeare said ‘No legacy is so rich as honesty.’

Both these reports pushed me down on the memory lane of a Sri Lankan expatriate employed by major stores in Riyadh, who once withdrew Saudi Riyal 200 (Rs 9640) from an ATM machine and when he received the printout showing his account balance, he was taken in for a surprise.

The statement showed a balance of over Saudi Riyals 200,000 (Rs 9,640,000) in his account.

This honest minor employee walked into the bank concerned and reported the error to the authorities.

Three days later, the manager of the bank called his company where he worked and requested them to send the man to his office. They refused saying he was busy offloading some goods from a truck.

The bank manager accompanied by three of his assistants visited this Lankan expatriate at work. The bank manager presented this honest man with a certificate of appreciation and a cash reward of Saudi Riyals 10,000 (Rs 482,000).

If he was dishonest he could have syphoned the account gradually and left for his home country with the illegal windfall but he didn’t do it.

We are proud of this Lankan expatriate whatever job he was hired for. We are sad to note that such honesty is foreign to even some big people in politics!
