A happy moment for a home vegetable grower!

By S.H.Moulana

Seyed Ukail who has growing vegetable at home as his passion and hobby spends his free time in taking care of this hobby. His very recent reward is from a snake gourd creeper (Pathawala in Sinhala and Podalankai) in Tamil) which he proudly showed me while I was on vacation a couple of months ago.

Although he has a very limited space to grow vegetable for daily use in his Wellawatta residence, he is still not discouraged by this handicaps.

Growing vegetable is real fun and a healthy hobby that anyone keen can excel at. One great aspect of home-grown vegetable allows you to have more natural, juicy and healthier vegetable that are also better for the environment. I recall a couple of years back my brother Seyed Faiz had a beautiful vegetable garden along with his residence at Dehiwela, where late Governor Alavi Moulana used to frequent and had the pleasure of plucking them. This news was even featured in main print medias.

Container gardening is the best type of gardening for many people. If you do not have a good plot of land to garden on, container gardening is your best. It is most practical way to garden for those of us not lucky enough to have large plots of soiled land to garden.

My daughter-in-law Shamila has grown Tomato, spinach and few other vegetables in containers in Riyadh, where we currently live.

Vegetable gardening may be a hobby for some people but it is rewarding because it makes you feel better, less stressed and produces delicious natural vegetable for you to eat. Why don’t you too try to grow your own vegetable at home?
