High risk period for COVID - 19

By Manjari Peiris
Colombo, 30 March, (

The Secretary, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA), Dr. Haritha Aluthge said that the high risk period for COVID - 19 declared by the government could be longer than that of March 25 to April 7 owing to the negligence of the public.

The process of social distancing was not properly adhered to during the time periods of lifting the curfew. Most of the people did not maintain the minimum distance of one meter between two people when moving in public places, in markets, shops, etc.

This negative situation could lead to beginning with community transmission of COVID - 19, he said.

"It is the responsibility of the people and the authorities to prevent it from reaching stage four which is community transmission. The public must remain within their households, except when it is essential to proceed outdoors. It is vital that 80 percent of the total population to be indoors."

He further said that a system must be adopted to enable those who are at home to obtain treatment if they fell ill. The public must be notified regarding such system.
