New Secretary to Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical services assumes duties

Major General Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General Army Medical Services, Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps and President of Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine assumed duties as the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services on 11 May 2020 at the Ministry of Health.

Major General Munasinghe, a renowned Consultant Radiologist by profession joined the Sri Lanka Army having completed the MBBS degree in 1984 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. After completion of basic military training in the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA), he was commissioned in the rank of Captain and enlisted into the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps.

During his military career of more than 34 years, he was awarded a number of decorations and insignia, inclusive of the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP), Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP), Vishishta Seva Vibhushana (VSV), Uththama Seva Padakkama (USP), East Humanitarian Operation Medal, North Humanitarian Operation Medal, Poorna Bhoomi Padakkama, North and East Operation Medal, Vadamarachchi Operation Medal, Riviresa Campaign Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal and Sri Lanka Armed Service Long Service Medal.

Major General Munasinghe, who is well qualified and experienced read for his MD (Radiology) in Sri Lanka and his MBBS holds Fellowship in Neuro-radiology and Interventionist Radiology (Australia 1994-1995), Fellowship in Neuro-interventionist Radiology (Oxford University 1999), Fellowship in Advanced CT (Maryland University-USA 2000) and also Fellowship in Advanced MRI (Germany 2018).

During his unblemished and dedicated medical career, he has held many key appointments as the Commanding Officer at the Colombo Army Hospital, Director Army Medical Services, Medical Adviser and the Director General of the Army Medical Services, an office he has been serving up until now. He is also currently serving as the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps of the Army.

A distinguished past product of Gnanodaya Vidyalaya and Tissa Vidyalaya in Kalutara, Major General Munasinghe joined history as the first Director General of Army Health Services, effective from 22 April 2014, and now the first Secretary to Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services with a military medicine milieu.
