So far 50,000 PCR tests done in Sri Lanka - Health Minister

In Sri Lanka over 50,000 PCR tests were done from January to May 24, said Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

According to the Minister, Sri Lanka performs PCR tests in 19 laboratories, while among them there are four laboratories belonging to private hospitals and three laboratories belonging to medical faculties.

The highest number of PCR tests, 16059 had been performed at Medical Research Institute, 6,096 by the medical faculty of Sri Jayawardenapura University, 5798 by the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, 4,765 by Karapitiya .

“When we heard about cases being reported in Wuhan, in December 2019, we started to prepare for any eventuality. The MRI was ready to conduct PCR tests by January this year. Soon we expanded the ability, to conduct PCR tests, to 15 hospitals.”

" Sri Lanka can now conduct 3,000 PCR tests on any given day and that it would be expanded to 6,000. The government would also enlist the support of private institutions, as well as medical faculties of universities." she added.
