Arumugam Thondaman's Body To be Cremated on 31st May With Full State Honors

The body of Late Arumugam Thondaman is currently at his residence in Battaramulla and will be taken to the Parliament premises today (Thursday) where the former Parliament members will pay their respects to him and then to the CWC headquarters in Colombo.

The body Arumugam Thondaman will lie at the Parliamentary complex between 10. 45 and 11 AM today (28) for final respects.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Ministers are expected to pay their respects to the Hill-country leader.

Thondaman represented Parliament since 1994 and led the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) since 1999.

The former Minister passed away on 26 May from a heart attack, after he was admitted to Thalangama Hospital.

The former Cabinet Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development is the grandson of politician Savumiamoorthy Thondaman, and was an old boy of Royal College, Colombo.

He was 56 years old at the time of his demise.

The funeral committee on 27th May, has decided to take the body to the Parliamentary Complex on May 28 and keep it there for a few hours. It was decided later to take the remains to Ceylon Workers Congress Headquarters on Flower Road in Colombo 03.

Senior Vice President of the Ceylon Workers Congress S. Sathyavel has said that the funeral of the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress and Minister of Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure Facilities Development Arumugam Thondaman who died of a sudden heart attack will be held on Sunday 31 May at the Norwood Stadium.

Arumugam Thondaman, a father of three, took over the leadership of the Ceylon Workers Congress in 1999 subsequent to the demise of his grandfather Saumyamoorthy Thondaman who was the founder of the CWC.

Born on November 29, 1964, Thondaman was elected to Parliament representing the Nuwara Eliya District in 1994 and has held various ministries in successive governments since then.

On 29 of this month the remains of Late Minister Thondaman will be brought to his residence in Ramboda, Kotmale and be placed there.

On 30 Saturday the remains will be taken to the CWC headquarters located in Kotagala.

The CWC said that the funeral of Late Arumugam Thondaman will be held with state honors on Sunday, May 31 at the Norwood Stadium.

In the meantime, Arumugam Thondaman’s son Jeevan Thondaman (26) is expected to contest the seat on behalf of the Sri Lanka Podujana Nidahas Peramuna at the upcoming Parliamentary General elections.

According to statement from the CWC, they wanted Jeevan Thondaman, a Barister and the son of Arumugan Thondaman to contest the poll to fill the void.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the CWC Politburo discussed the matter with Prime Minister Rajapaksa and the request was made by Deputy Leader of the CWC Senthil Thondaman.

The Ceylon Workers Congress is a political party represented in the “Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Sandanaya” and had already submitted its nominations to contest the General Election with the alliance.

According to the statement, the Prime Minister had praised the Ceylon Workers Congress decision to nominate the son of late Arumugam Thondaman to replace him in the nominations list and stressed the next step on the request would be taken.

So far it is learnt The CWC is yet to name a leader who would succeed Arumugam Thondaman.
