Company Directors' Course

Colombo, 03 February, ( The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) together with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Sri Lanka Division conducted a seminar on Company Directors' Course for three days at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

This course provided a complete grounding in the requirements of the boardroom and noted that the role of a director is becoming far more demanding. Boards and individual directors are more accountable than ever before. The complexity of directorship today is such that even people who are accomplished in business need specific education on how to be a good director.

The programme also exposed the individuals to a wide range of new ideas, both from the expert speakers and from interaction with fellow directors in an intensive learning environment.

The course identified the duties and liabilities of a director, introduced best practice governance and the board meeting process, provided a director-oriented introduction to the understanding of financial statements, identified indicators to observe, and questions to ask, in overseeing the financial management of a company, introduced the concept of strategy and identified the linkage of strategy to the financial health of an organization, examined the challenges of the boardroom environment and identified the best way for the company to raise capital to fund expansion.

The speakers included Arittha R Wikramanayake, Precedent Partner, Nithya Partners; Chandra Jayaratne, Former Managing Director, Eagle Insurance; Reyaz Mihular, Partner, KPMG Ford Rhodes & Thornton; Mallik de Silva, Group Finance Manager, Richard Pieris & Co.;. Ruwan Pradeep Kumara, Risk and Control Manager, Ceylon Tobacco Co Ltd and Dhammika Perera, Director Investigation, Securities & Exchange Commission.
