By Manjari Peiris
Colombo, 20 June, (

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that steps would be taken to uplift the Pririvena and Dhamma School education.

Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Nayaka Thera of the Malwatte Chapter expressed his admiration for the appointment of two Task Force for a safe country, a lawful and disciplined society and the preservation of archaeological sites.

The Thera said that they believe that these forces will achieve their objectives in a meaningful manner. The Maha Sangha said that the Buddhist Advisory Council is also honored by the community for the President's initiative to take on the overall mission of the country.

The Buddhist Advisory Council pointed out the current situation in the field of Pirivena and Dhamma School education to the President and the educational authorities.

There should be a revision of the syllabus and the curriculum of the Pirivena, he said. The need to teach Sinhala, Pali, Sanskit, Tamil and English as well as IT subjects as concurrent subjects in the Pirivena syllabus was discussed at length.

The Sangha said that the Dhamma school should focus more on the education of the students and the Dhamma school teachers should be given proper training.

The Venerable Thero pointed out that it is a great task for a good society to stop the tuition classes on Sundays from 6 am to 2 pm and completely stop tuition classes.

The Maha Sangha pointed out that there is a tendency for young children to be abused, including using drugs.

The importance of establishing a Presidential Task Force on Pirivenas was also discussed. The Maha Sangha also pointed out that the graduating monks and the students of the Dharmacharya examination should use the Buddha Dhamma in schools.

It was also discussed at length about the establishment of a Pirivena Directorship for Pirivenas, the upliftment of the Pirivena student scholarship, the inclusion of sections that motivate the students to acquire Dhamma knowledge by culture, Pali and Abhidhamma in Dhamma School text books.
