Police conducts investigations on Modara bomb blast

Illangakoon says the explosion took place when the police was conducting a special search operation on a house in the area around 6 am in the morning.

It was revealed that Police conducting surveillance, search and clear operations in the area have been tipped off by a civilian about the presence of this LTTE man inside this house, prompting the Police to surround the house early this morning in order to get the suspect out of the house.

However, within seconds the LTTE Tiger suspect, believed to be a suicide cadre blew himself up causing a huge blast which ripped through the roof of the house and inflicted injuries.

Seven persons who were injured in the incident have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. Three policemen and four civilians were wounded.

One of the Police officers critically injured in the blast was undergoing a surgery at the time this report was filed.

Army spokesman Brigadier Nanayakkara said a 9mm pistol, a magazine and five bullets were found inside the house.

The Police have called the services of the government analyst for further investigations.

It has also been reported that the police has arrested a suspect this morning in connection with the blasting of transformers in Kalpitiya, Puttalam.

The army spokesman said 8 kilogrammes of c-4 type explosives, a roll of wire and batteries were found buried in his garden.
