By Philip Fernando in Seattle for Asian Tribune

Seattle, 09 March, (Asiantribune.com): Jaliya Wickramasuriya, Sri Lankan Consular General in Los Angeles has been selected as the new Ambassador to United States of America. He is expected to take up the new assignment in Washington D.C. once the formal appointment procedures are finalized. He had a brief but highly successful spell as Consular General in LA where he brought a sense of unity to over 60,000 expatriates who reside there now. He won them over with his unassuming ways and communications skills, according to most observers. A highly successful businessman by his own merit, a trailblazer and people person, he had great success in promoting Ceylon Royal in a fiercely competitive market where coffee was considered king prior to his coming to LA. His Atlanta, Georgia based company promoted a range of teas. He hosted several events in LA which were considered outstanding due to the participation of a record number of Sri Lankans. The visit of Sri Lankan President Mahainda Rajapaksa to LA last year and the celebration of Sri Lanka's 60th Independence Anniversary this year were feathers in his cap as thousands attended the two functions. He launched the Sri Lankan outreach program earlier this year, getting the Diaspora to lobby the U S legislators and familiarize them with Sri Lanka's heroic mission to rid the country of terrorism and bring about peace. The program was well received and is considered a great success.

According to Foreign Ministry sources Wickramasuriya would take up his new post no sooner the necessary formalities were completed before the Parliament High Posts Committee.
